ORGANIZATION: A PARENT’S TOOL

As a parent, you’ll be well aware of how much you need to organise on a day to day basis. Unfortunately, when you are handling a small army of people that you’ve created yourself, it’s common to forget every tiny thing you must do around the home. Even when you keep a pad and pen handy to make lists, those lists seem to grow legs and go on walks – away from the safe places that you keep them and end up in the Place Where All Things Go. One of the biggest stresses for any family is the prospect of moving from the house you’ve always lived in, to an entirely new one. The reason it’s so stressful? Well that’d be down to the lists and things going missing. A house move means a whole new level of organization. And this time, you’re not moving from college to your own little bijou apartment, you’re moving with your children to a bigger place to live. Stressed? Absolutely.

Moving to your new house has, until now, been a massive financial drain. Closing escrow and sorting out home insurance and putting down deposits on a new property has made your bank account pop open that glass of wine with you and cry. As it’s already hurt the bottom line of your purse, you need to think about the actual move itself and how you can save some cash as you go. Not that you absolutely need to move home on a smaller budget, but if you can save the smallest amounts here and there, you can guarantee that you will feel like you’re saving a lot of cash along the way.

Moving is a big expense as it is, so while you’re busy trying to get you and the children organised, you should think about where you can save yourself a little cash along the way. Redirecting Mail

You wouldn’t believe how many places you have to change your address for when you move to a new home. The best thing that you can do is redirect all your mail with the post office and have your mail forwarded to your newest address. As each piece of mail comes in, change your address with that company. It’s the best way to remember whether you have changed where you live with a particular company. As you change over, tick off on the list you’ve pegged to the kitchen door.

Utility Change

Moving to a new property may mean that some of your service providers for your utilities and your internet connection won’t supply you anymore. It’s always a good idea to see whether you could make some savings by using a new company that didn’t provide you with a service at your last property.

Tell The Bank

Okay, so this could easily come under your change of address, but you need to inform your bank you have moved to a new property, and this is far more important than just informing your insurance provider. Financial companies that are part of your day to day life need to know about the move so that your sensitive information doesn’t end up in the hands of the new owners to your old property. Write to each financial centre as soon as you can, and make sure it’s a special delivery so that you can guarantee that they have received your request to change your address.

Car Details

Moving to a new house should not be a stress for you, so ensure that you have changed your car ownership and driving license addresses over to the new property. This should also include your car insurance provider, as the last thing that you would want to do is miss out on this and end up with the wrong information on your insurance if you are pulled over for any reason. You have to make life easy on yourself and that’s why your car information should be changed as soon as possible.

Babysitting Services

If you have enjoyed the services of local sitters, make sure that you let them know that you are moving and won’t be using them anymore. Your children will need to have new childcare going forward, especially if you’ve moved to a new place. Make sure that on the actual moving day itself you have the right childcare to keep the kids busy while you’re hauling boxes. Get a family member though, as it could be too difficult to get hold of an old babysitter if it’s going to upset your children.

Cleaning

Before you leave your old home, make sure that you call in professional cleaners to gut it out and make it look brand new and ready for moving. You can also do the same thing to your new house so that it is cleaned to your standards before moving in. Not only is this a nice gesture for the house you’ve just sold, it’s going to be far nicer to move all your things into a house that has been freshly cleaned for you.

‘Unpacking’ Box

When you move to a new house, you need one box that is clearly labelled with the means to make a hot drink, the chargers to the phones and tablets in the home and any information that you need for move-in day. There’s nothing wrong with having a bottle of champagne in that box, too, so that you can pop the cork and toast to your new home!
