How To Achieve Good Oral Health

Good oral health helps a person to be more confident about their appearance, makes it easier to maintain good general health, and can even help them to live longer.  Therefore, its importance is not to be underestimated!

There are two main ways that a person can ensure that they have healthy teeth and gums.  Firstly, by taking proper care at home and secondly, by making regular visits to the dentist in Tunbridge Wells.

2 important tips for good oral health

Keeping clean

Many people don’t realize how important it is to make every effort to keep the teeth and gums in good condition with regular brushing and flossing.  A good toothbrush and some fluoride toothpaste should be used for two minutes twice a day, every day.

While it is important to brush twice a day, the clean before bed is arguably the most important.  This is because any food, plaque, and other debris that is left to fester on the teeth overnight can cause some serious damage over time.

The two-minute rule is important too.  If brushing lasts less than two minutes, then it is likely that the teeth have not been thoroughly cleaned and that some debris remains.  If it goes on for several minutes, then the person may be removing some of the enamel from their teeth.  Enamel is a protective layer that is important for the health of the teeth.

Flossing or using interdental brushes should take place once a day.  This should be enough to remove any bits that brushing has not managed to reach without irritating the teeth or gums too much.

Many people make the mistake of rinsing their mouth with water after brushing their teeth.  This is a mistake, as it removes some of the toothpaste from the teeth and with it the protective layer that is provided by the fluoride.

People who rinse with water after brushing undo some of their good work and are at greater risk of developing cavities than those who do not do this.

Go for check-ups

Making regular check-up appointments with the dentist is an important part of maintaining good oral health.  The dentist can identify any potential issues before the patient is even aware of them, and thus treat them quickly and easily.

For example, many people are not aware of the beginnings of a cavity.  If allowed to develop, this can cause damage to the tooth and require more extensive treatment.  The dentist can nip such an issue in the bud straight away, saving the patient time and money.

A check-up should also involve getting a professional clean from either the dentist or hygienist.  Even if the patient has been scrupulous about brushing and flossing at home, there will be some areas that prove difficult to reach.

Getting a scale and polish means that the teeth will be easier to keep clean at home.  This treatment is also often very effective at removing stains, so the patient leaves their appointment with a smile that looks much brighter and whiter as well as being squeaky clean.
