The day has gone as smoothly as it could have gone. Food down clothes, a broken toy that resulted in hours of crying. A spilt drink on your lovely carpet, and a tantrum because no chocolate was allowed. You know the score, it’s part and parcel of being a parent.

But we have to admit that by far the most annoying time of the day has to be the bedtime. The fun of the day is not over for your children. And the last thing that they want to do is sleep. If they do, it comes with rules. Maybe a night time chocolate bar, the Ipad going to bed with them, or even a sleep in your bed.

These are obviously their rules. And there are ways to get them into bed without having to stoop to their demands. We think we can bust the bedtime nightmares with these easy steps, have a read on to find out more.

Bath & Warm Drink

It’s a well known fact that having a relaxing soak in a warm bath, then cuddling up in bed is enough to make any of us go a bit sleepy. But, how many relaxing soaks in the bath have you seen your toddler have? Well, we know they don’t exist, but it really doesn’t matter. All you need to do is run a bath that’s mildly warm, but not as hot as you might have it. And try and keep play to a minimum whilst they’re in there.

Then, get them all wrapped up in some fluffy pyjamas, a dressing gown, and with story book in their hand. If you couple this with a warm drink, either of milk or hot chocolate, you’ll have such an easy bed time. The focus needs to be on keeping bath time about relaxation, rather than all of the splashing and throwing water around that they might want to do.

 

Same Times All The Time

Getting into a routine is just so important if you want to get rid of all of the bedtime nightmares that you’re having. It’s so easy to make it an hour or two earlier each night. But this is what might cause you problems. If you check out some of the most common bedtime tips for parents, this is always one of them.

Once into a routine, your child’s body will work like clockwork. And around the time that bedtime comes, you’ll start to notice that everything slows down. If you keep it to random times, their body won’t know what’s going on at any time. Think of it as food. If you have your breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a set time, those times are when your belly will rumble each day!

 

A Little Bit Of Compromise

Sometimes you’re going to have to compromise, it’s like that with everything you do in life. You’re not always going to be able to get them to bed without letting them watch one more episode of their favourite programme. You might have to promise things such as breakfast in bed, a movie day, or even something like a cool day out. If you’re really struggling, doing this as a one off is no problem. Making a habit of it is when you start creating nightmares.

  1. One thing that really helped me to bust my bedtime nightmares when I was younger is always think of the situation in a positive way. For instance, all of my nightmares revolved around people or characters which scared me, so if I thought about them in a funny or happy way I wouldn’t be scared of them any more. I also thought of what it would be like if me and the character/person were best friends. This always seemed to work!
