MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN DECLUTTERING

Not Starting Out with a Goal

People often work best when they have a clear goal that they are working towards.

Why is it that you want to declutter now?

Do you want to make more space in your home?

Are you trying to generate some extra cash by selling some things online?

Is your living situation about to change in the future?

Your goal could be something as simple as being able to get through your loft or garage without tripping over!

Not Having a System

Decluttering tends to work best when you have a clear system in place. The 80/20 rule is a common one which many people choose to follow when they are decluttering.

Essentially, this suggests that we use 20% of our things 80% of the time. It is the remaining 80% which you should be looking to tackle.

You may also need to sort out certain logistical details such as a residential trash service pick up.

Generally, people don’t like getting rid of things because they think that they will need them one day. But more often than not, that day never actually comes.

Not Devoting the Amount of Time Needed

To declutter properly, you need to put in a great deal of thought and energy. If you are just getting rid of things without thinking about it, you are more likely to throw away something you regret or not get rid of enough.

Remember, don’t throw away anything which belongs to other members of the household as you will probably end up never hearing the end of it!!

Buying More Stuff to Fill Up the Space

You have just worked so hard to declutter your house; don’t go out on a spending spree to fill it all back up again! And now that you have gone through all this effort, you may also want to re-evaluate your buying habits.

Rather than impulse buying at the store, you should instead weigh up every purchase that you make. Do you already have something similar? Are you going to get much usage out of that particular item? Simply taking a step out of the store to reassess your options can make all the difference.

While decluttering may seem like a straightforward process, it is actually worthwhile. Taking your time to make sure that you get it right and ensuring that you don’t make some of the common mistakes which are listed in this blog post.
