We are all busy, at any given moment, with dozens and maybe hundreds of obligations, desires, pet projects, and more.
In fact, according to some surveys, the millennial generation typically rates themselves as being busier and more stressed out than just about anyone else, whether that’s really objectively true or not.
Unfortunately, there are certain events and circumstances in life that can massively diminish our ability to be productive, and that can cause us no shortage of frustration as a result. And moving homes is definitely one of those events.
While there are things you can do to make sure your move goes more smoothly, such as utilising the services of a company like Chess Moving, for example – it can be difficult to stick with your usual routine when you’re constantly going back and forth between house viewings, and calls with letting agents.
Here are some tips for staying productive during and after a move.
Set your expectations realistically, use to do lists, and try to schedule your time as much as possible
First things first; you are just not going to have as much free time and energy available to spend on other obligations while househunting, as you would under normal conditions.
There are only so many hours in the day, and something’s got to give.
One way to keep yourself as productive as possible, however, is to take a sober look at how many hours in the day you realistically have at your disposal. And to then use to do lists and careful scheduling to make sure that those hours are stretched as far as possible.
If you need to put a few more mundane chores on the back burner for a minute, so be it. Make sure your big projects and obligations get the lion’s share of your attention.
Re-establish familiar routines as soon as possible, once you’re in your new home
In the absence of a sense of familiarity, it’s pretty common that we will allow our everyday routines to falter and fizzle out at least for a while.
People who move homes often experience this particular drawback, and find themselves caught in some kind of chaotic state of limbo for weeks and maybe even months after actually arriving at their new homes.
Do what you can to sidestep this insidious issue, by forcing yourself to re-establish familiar routines as soon as possible once you’re in your new home. Among other things, that means resuming your usual wake up time, getting your standard morning ritual back on track, and all the rest.
Don’t underestimate how much your small everyday routines give structure and order to your life as a whole.
Stay well-fed, and do what you can to get enough sleep during the move
Kelly McGonigal, author of the hit book “The Willpower Instinct,” is well-known for highlighting research that shows that when we are stressed out, malnourished, and sleep-deprived, our willpower “reserves” are significantly lower. As in, scientific studies continually find that people in those states just give in to temptation much more impulsively.
Suffice to say, willpower is a prerequisite for productivity. So force yourself to stay well-fed, and do whatever you can to get enough sleep during your move.
If that means buying a slow cooker and keeping some meal on the go at all times, so be it.
